Aims of the Department
The English Department at St. Joseph’s College provides an inclusive and supportive environment where all students can thrive. We aim to:
- Inspire a lifelong love of reading, writing and spoken language.
- Develop students’ ability to read, write and communicate effectively and confidently, equipping them with strong English-based skills for life and learning.

Curriculum Overview
Key Stage 3
Pupils experience a broad and engaging curriculum, developing reading, writing, and speaking & listening skills through a wide variety of texts — including poetry, contemporary fiction, non-fiction, and media. They also use digital tools to support learning and creativity, helping them see the relevance of English in the modern world.
Key Stage 4
At KS4, pupils follow the CCEA GCSE English Language course, focusing on:
- Reading – analysing and evaluating fiction and non-fiction texts
- Writing – creative, informative, and persuasive writing
- Speaking & Listening – discussion, presentation, and role play
This course builds confidence, critical thinking, and communication skills, providing a strong foundation for further study and lifelong enjoyment of language and literature.
